Last month, The Press revealed details of a trail of heartbreak left by the one-time Christchurch resident.
Since publishing the story, The Press has been contacted by at least 10 people, including Nunnick's former wife, claiming to have been his victims.
Yesterday, Nunnick appeared in the Christchurch District Court on two fraud-related charges. He was granted bail to reappear at a later date.
Acting Detective Sergeant Rusty Rayne said Nunnick came in voluntarily when he was contacted by police over the charges.
The charges related to one complaint laid via email from the United States. It related to incidents last year.
Rayne would not confirm the identity of the complainant.
Nunnick advertised on online dating websites saying he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He had not.
One woman who contacted The Press about Nunnick said he told her he had broken his back in a base-jumping accident.
"He explained in great detail about how his chute hadn't opened, and how he'd hit the rock face on the way down before hitting the ground," the woman said.
Nunnick's former wife, Michelle, said she was pleased to hear he had been brought to account.
Michelle, who now lives in Australia, does not want her last name published.
She said Nunnick had done a lot of things that were immoral but not necessarily illegal.
Rayne said police were seeking a legal opinion on further charges, but they were unlikely.

Me too but I had a lucky break - too many of those lovely red flags! I met him after 2 wks of phone/email contact and after that I thought he was one big fat sweaty PIG and ditched him. He was not who he made out. This was 2007. There were too many questions about my finances and my financial status, his so called cancer story and having nothing left after allegedly paying for it - all seemed like a set up and the fact that he needed MY help to get him back on his feet after a few days of email/phone contact. He wanted me to loan him money, he wanted me to go into business/property buying with him and I was, on all other matters to pick up the tab until he was working again and at the time, he had lost his wallet - so what else was there to do? I hasten to add this was one week after he had made contact when I had been very ill. Everything I said I wanted in a man - he was that, and more. There were numerous discrepanies in what he told me - his answers evasive or general with little or no detail. He seems to be everything you want - just finds out what you're into and he pushes all the right buttons. Question him and be sure of yourself and you will see right thru him if you can hook him on technical areas like diving and sailing. He said he loved me almost right away and he felt connected - yet we had never even met! He was also very keen to engage in intimate sexual talk right away. He is without doubt a true online predator and cyberpath - my worry is that he would change his name and description of himself - when last I knew he was on facebook, trademe and match.com under different names. He has history in the West Coast as well Geraldine, Tekapo, ChCH, Rangiora way in the SI as far as I know.
Hey I'm another one of Richard Nunnick's romantic interests. Having met him in Auckland and like the last lady, thinking he was overweight but funny I was duped into thinking he was interested in me. At least I did get shouted to the movies on one or two occasions but I'm sure after finding out I had no more money than he had, he ditched me too. What a loser and he has duped not only kiwi women but overseas ladies as well. In fact I have chatted to an airline stewardess in Seattle who knew him and thought he was wonderful. If only she knew - well, maybe now she does LOL. As for saying he had cancer. Being a cancer survivor myself - I cannot believe someone would do that for personal gain. How sad!!!!! I hope he gets his comeupance in the longrun - Karma is a wonderful thing. Least we all had lucky escapes. Elizbeth.
Well caught at last great ..Imet him on line...about 6 years ago and got on very well for about a fortnight...I was South Otago and he was living at the Haast...I got suspicious when I couldn't get through to him at nights..his explaination was thunderstorms...yeah right...I found out he had been seeing a bank officer from Queenstown and a Doc worker from there as well and another older woman from Dunedin at the time I was getting to know him..thank goodness being an ex cop I began to see holes in his stories... I really feel for those he has ripped off...the only thing I lost was a family sized tent...nothing compared to others...

Well I never. I have had text contact with Richard for 3years and I thought he did have terminal cancer. Two days ago I had a conversation with him, which was his goodbye call, apparently he was in Christchurch hospital and only had a week to live! I received a text at 3am on 3 December 08, so his final goodbye and thanking me for being his friend and believing in him and give him the strength!

My gosh! I just found this out by Googling on his name - I knew Rich Nunnick over 20 years ago, met him skydiving in Florida. He later came to Sweden (where I live) and spent time with me and other "friends" he made. We had nothing romantic going since I immediately got put off by all his incredible stories, obviously lies. He took advantage of so many people here, used their hospitality, clocked up everyones phone bill by calling NZ when noone was looking. My boyfriend bought him a ticket to the USA - that he had no intent on using. Eventually he fooled a girl friend of mine by pretending they had a future together, he stole jewellery from her before vanishing. Later some friends here who had been ripped off by him, found out he was in England, flew over there and found him in a bar. They quitely sat down beside him and then took him outside for a "chat"... Haven´t heard a sound about the guy since then, so this was ... well, not a surprise, but made me wonder how he could have gotten away with things all these years!
Gosh, I have so many stories about him...
Anyone know what happened? Did he get convicted??? I would really like to know!
I know Richard very well and he is living in Christchurch, he is still continuing his lies to women and has not stopped. He told me he owned various amounts of property and is using the surname Porteous, this is his step fathers surname and he is an x cop LOL if only they knew what he has been up to!!! Someone needs to do something to stop this man as he is now preying on a local wealthy woman!!
